CHICAGO—A jury acquitted R. Kelly on all counts of child pornography after less than a day of deliberations Friday, ending an ordeal for the R&B superstar that began when he was charged six years ago.

The Grammy award-winning singer dabbed his face with a handkerchief and hugged each of his four attorneys after the verdict was read. The singer had faced 15 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors had argued that a graphic sex tape showed Kelly having sex with a girl as young as 13 at the time. Both Kelly, 41, and the now 23-year-old alleged victim had denied they were on the tape. Neither testified during the trial.

The prosecution's star witness was a woman who said she engaged in three-way sex with Kelly and the alleged victim. Defense attorneys argued the man on the tape didn't have a large mole on his back; Kelly has such a mole. (More Info)

Sparkle On The Stand: Testifies The Victim Of R. Kelly Is Her Niece

Defense claims that is not R. Kelly on the sex tape and the woman shown is not the niece of R&B singer Sparkle.

Niece of singer Sparkle also denies being the victim in the video.

Four key witnesses have identified her as the victim in the sex tape including her best friend at the time and Sparkle.

The loud bickering began when Genson asked if someone could have doctored the illicit video to make it appear as if Kelly were paying a young girl to perform various sex acts. Edwards, who wore cosmetic glitter under her left eye to provide her trademark “sparkle,” gave a snide smile.

“I know my family,” she said. “I know them. Trust me.”

“And so you know and believe your [relative] took money from Robert Kelly and then had sex with him, which is on that tape?” Genson asked. “That’s what you know?”

“Just like he made her do,” Edwards said, struggling to maintain her composure. “You see she’s a robot on that tape.”

Genson then tried to make Edwards acknowledge she didn’t know who made the tape.

“Robert made the tape,” she answered, her voice growing louder. “You can clearly see him setting it up, passing my [relative] some money, like she is a prostitute.”

Genson suggested Edwards hoped to profit from the tape because she spoke with a lawyer about it before talking to the police.

“Sweetie, I am not trying to get money from anybody,” Edwards said.

“I’m not your sweetie,” Genson snapped.

Cook County Circuit Judge Vincent Gaughan halted the testimony and ordered the two to calm down. Stunned jurors stole sideways glances with each other as a few tried to stifle laughter.

Kelly, who rarely looked at Edwards during her testimony, stared straight ahead with no expression on his face. (More Info)

Defense Secretary Gates Considering Reinstituting The Draft

You plan on drafting who??

In an exchange sure to send ripples of anxiety through the all-volunteer military, the Senate’s senior defense spending member asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen if it is time to “consider reinstituting the draft.”

Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), chairman of the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee, asked Gates and Mullen the question he said no one wants to ask: “Is the cost of maintaining an all-volunteer force becoming unsustainable and, secondly, do we need to consider reinstituting the draft.”

Inouye cited the ever-increasing pay and benefits paid to active and reserve service members, noting that it now costs an estimated $126,000 per service member.

Gates and Mullen both said they thought the current volunteer force was the finest the U.S. has ever fielded. Gates said he “personally” believes that “it is worth the cost."

Mullen was not quite as sanguine.

“A future that argues for, or results in, continuous escalation of those costs does not bode well for a military of this size,” he said, adding it the rising costs will eventually force the US to shrink the military, spend less on new weapons or to “curtail operations.” The question of pay and benefits for the U.S. military “is the top issue we need to come to terms with,” Mullen said.

This marks the first time a senior member of Congress has seriously discussed reinstituting the draft in almost two years. Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, called for reinstituting the draft in November 2006. (Military.com)

R. Kelly Sex Tape Played In Court

The sex tape at the center of the trial — which allegedly depicts Kelly having sex with an underage girl — was played in court on Tuesday. According to the Tribune, Kelly watched intently, at times resting his chin in his palm, and he apparently shook his head as he leaned in to talk to his attorney; jurors either took notes or fidgeted.

After the tape was played, the trial nearly ended just hours after it began: Former Chicago police investigator Dan Everett, who testified that he first obtained the tape in February 2002 from a Chicago Sun-Times reporter, used the word "investigation" — Judge Vincent Gaughan had previously issued an order forbidding the use of the word. Gaughan immediately stopped the testimony and asked the jury to leave. The judge reprimanded Everett and the prosecution: "If they do it again, I certainly am going to grant a mistrial," he said.

Everett then corrected his wording to say "interview," and the jury was let back in.

On Tuesday morning, the media was admonished by the judge, who said that anyone who recreates images from the sex tape could be charged with reproducing child pornography. This could cause legal difficulty for any members of the media who have played the tape in an effort to verify the identities of the people in it. (IHH)

Teaching The Constitution Is "Terrorism & Espionage"

On the Alex Jones Show today, a bible student at a large Christian college in Mount Vernon, Texas, related a story of intimidation as Department of Homeland Security goons dressed in black accused him of engaging in terrorism for teaching a group of Boy Scouts about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The student and interim pastor, going by the name “Jeff,” told Alex Jones he was assigned last September the task of talking to a group of Boy Scouts, specifically concerning “Americanism” in higher education. Jeff told the boys they need to “reorient” themselves to the Constitution because such knowledge will “make or break the country.”

After tutoring the boys, Jeff was called into the university president’s office. There he was confronted by a “man in black” wearing sunglasses from the Department of Homeland Security who was accompanied by another federal official in a gray suit. In addition, state police were present during the interrogation and Jeff was told the FBI were also involved. Jeff was informed “every word” of his conversation with the Boy Scouts was recorded and he had a transcript of the conversation. Jeff’s talk was, the DHS official in a gray suit declared, “terror and espionage” and if he continued to engage in such behavior he would be arrested and “we can have your head on a silver platter.” Moreover, the feds threatened to intervene in the process of the college’s accreditation, a threat that apparently disturbed a “high level university official,” who was so “agitated” he was shaking. When I saw these pics of Alicia Keys on another site, I thought something looked odd. At closer inspection I noticed that Ak’s butt was considerably flatter in the pic on the left than it is on the right.

So I opened up Photoshop and superimposed one photo over the other and the difference in both pics was startling. The result is conclusive evidence that Alicia Keys wore butt pads for her appearance on the Dave Letterman Show. (Sandra Rose)

Black Secret Service Agent Finds Noose In Training Facility

The U.S. Secret Service, the federal agency whose No. 1 job is to protect the president, has released a White agent after a Black employee said he found a noose hanging at the main training facility near Washington, D.C. “The employee involved has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by our Office of Professional Responsibility, which serves as the agency’s internal affairs office,” Edwin M. Donovan, assistant special agent in charge of government and public affairs, wrote in an e-mail response to Cox Newspapers. “At the conclusion of the investigation, additional information may be available.” The noose incident comes at a time when the agency is battling image problems concerning charges that it is a bastion of racial hostility. Give Me My Rice Back!

So I was at Sam's Club (like Costco) this weekend and I went to the Rice aisle like any normal grocery trip, expecting to buy rice.

All I saw was an empty shelf.

WTF? How does a warehouse not have rice?! I knew something was up when I went to the register and the clerk politely explained, "We don't stock as much rice anymore but you can go to management and let them know." Other customers were in line to talk to management so I just left the store thinking of the economy...

Today while checking world news, I found an article that supported my suspicions! Multiple stores in the U.S. will not or can't purchase as much rice, wheat, oil (cooking), and flour!

The New York Sun newspaper is reporting that major retailers on both coasts are limiting customers’ purchases of flour, rice and cooking oil.

The Sun reports that a Costco Warehouse in California ran out of rice, frustrating shoppers. “Where’s the rice?” an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. “You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous.”

The rice that is left is selling at near one dollar a pound, and in some areas, customers report paying about $30 for a 25-pound bag.

Most Costco members were only allowed to buy only one bag. One clerk reportedly dropped two sacks back on the stack after taking them from a customer who tried to buy more than the one bag limit.

“Due to the limited availability of rice, we are limiting rice purchases based on your prior purchasing history,” a sign above the dwindling supply said, the Sun reports.

Shoppers said the limits had been in place for a few days, and that rice supplies had been spotty for a few weeks. A store manager referred questions to officials at Costco headquarters near Seattle, who did not return calls or e-mail messages to the Sun.

A New York Costco reportedly was not restricting rice, but is limiting oil and flour. Rumors floating on the Internet say that bakery owners bought up flour at warehouse stores after their commercial suppliers doubled their prices.

Spiking food prices have led to riots in recent weeks in Haiti, Indonesia, and several African nations. India recently banned export of all but the highest quality rice, and Vietnam blocked the signing of a new contract for foreign rice sales. (Full Story)
